"… And they say that he still wanders the halls of the abandoned school at night…. calling out for someone to love. 'Love me…. Love me….' And then… If he catches you…"
"What?!" you screamed, hands clenched tightly around the fuzzy red blanket. "What happens then?!"
"Well… I don't know if I should tell you." Nikolai said, smirking slightly, "Might scare you…"
"TELL ME!" you cried, "Tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me!"
"Alright, alright! Okay… So, if he catches you… if he catches you he…"
"HE DOES WHAT?!"
"He rips your still beating heart out of your chest… AND HE EATS IT!" Nikolai finished in a frightening tone, purple eyes glinting evilly in the low lamplight.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" You shrieked, hands scrambling at your blanket, holding it close to you for comfort.
"Well, goodnight, дорогая." Nikolai kissed your forehead lightly, sailing quietly into your bedroom and conking out immediately on the big, squishy mattress.
You sat there on the couch, trembling with fear for long minutes before finally being able to tiptoe off to bed.
'This is the last time I ask Nikolai to tell me a story before I go to sleep…' you thought to yourself, (e/c) eyes darting around the room, terrified.
When you had gotten into bed, you snaked an arm around your sleeping boyfriend, hugging him close for comfort. 'It's all okay, _______...' you told yourself, 'Nothing's going to get you…'
Finally you drifted off, with the help of Nikolai's comforting warm body beside you.
You woke to the sound of a faint, steady thudding in the other room.
"N-Nikolai…?" you murmured, "Is that you?" You looked over beside you to see your boyfriend with his back to you, snoozing soundly.
But there it was again… Thud… Thud… Thud.
You rubbed your eyes and threw the covers off you, getting out of bed to go investigate. You followed the noise through the living room and into the kitchen, clock on the oven giving the whole place an eerie glow.
Thud… Thud… Thud.
The noise continued, echoing through the house. It sounded like… footsteps.
"Nikolai?" you called again. "Are you there?"
Thud… Thud… Thud.
And then… you could hear it… a soft sound on the edge of your hearing.
"Love…" it went, "Love… me… Love me…"
You backed slowly towards the kitchen counter, grabbing a frying pan up from where you had left it in the sink. "Who's there?" you asked, hoping against hope there would be no answer.
"Love me… Looooove me…." The voice sounded strained and warped, as if it came from far away… but it was getting closer. "Love me…"
'They say that he still wanders the halls of the abandoned school at night…. calling out for someone to love.' Nikolai's words rang in your head.
It sounded close this time. Too close… You could see something moving in the living room, a large shape, shuffling across the floor with slow, steady steps. Thud… Thud… Thud.
You brandished your frying pan, biting your lip nervously, "Stay back!" you warned, immediately regretting it. Now the thing knew where you were!
It turned gradually towards you, "Love me…" it moaned mournfully, walking ever so slowly into the kitchen.
"I SAID BACK!" you screamed shrilly.
'How is Nikolai not hearing this?!'
The thing outstretched its arm towards you, continuing its chant, "Love me… Love me…"
'Oh God… It's going to rip my heart out of my chest!' you thought, aforementioned heart beating faster and faster.
And then it was right in front of you, long bony fingers clawing at you… So you did the only reasonable thing. You smacked it as hard as you could with the large cast iron frying pan.
WHAM! It hit the ground, skidding across the floor.
"святой ад!" someone swore… someone lying on the ground a few feet away from you.
"Nikolai!" you cried, "Nikolai, is it you?"
"Yes it's me! Ow! That really hurt…" the Belarusian stood, rubbing his hooded head.
"Don't ever scare me like that again!" you rushed into his arms, hugging him tightly, heart still threatening to beat its way out of your chest.
"I don't plan to…. You have quite an arm on you, ______." He hugged you back, burying his long nose in your hair.
"Why would you do something like that? Scared me half to death!"
"I…" Nikolai trailed off, seeming at a loss for words until he muttered sheepishly, "When you're scared you hug me more…"
You shook your head, sighing. Quite frankly you were used to this behavior but there was one thing that was bothering you, "Wait… If it was you wandering around the house, who was in the bed?"
Nikolai took your hand, leading you into the bedroom and flicking on the light, "Look…" he said, throwing back the covers to reveal a couple pillows stacked up together and a basketball lying near the headboard, "You're easily tricked when you're tired…" he snickered.
"Hey! Am not…" you punched Nikolai on the arm, glaring at him.
"Whatever you say…" Nikolai rolled his eyes, shoving the pillows off his side of the bed and hopping on, looking at you expectantly.
You sighed, climbing in after him and snuggling up to his side, "Well, you were right about one thing… Being scared really does make me cuddly." You kissed him gently on the lips, wrapping an arm around his neck.
The light bulb flickered and went out, making you shriek and push yourself close to Nikolai.
"What was that?!"
"I-I don't know… It wasn't me this time!"
